{"id":574,"date":"2011-11-04T05:25:28","date_gmt":"2011-11-04T04:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/?p=574"},"modified":"2011-11-11T15:33:06","modified_gmt":"2011-11-11T14:33:06","slug":"small-farm-installation-guide-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/index.php\/2011\/11\/04\/small-farm-installation-guide-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Farm Install Guide &#8211; Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the third part of a post showing the typical steps required to install and configure a medium sized SharePoint Server 2010 farm.<\/p>\n<p>Other pages of this post include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Part 1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/index.php\/2011\/10\/27\/small-farm-installation-guide-1\/\" title=\"Farm Install Guide \u2013 Part 1\">General Notes and Installation Accounts<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Part 2 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/index.php\/2011\/11\/01\/small-farm-installation-guide-2\/\" title=\"Farm Install Guide \u2013 Part 2\">WFE Server Installation and Configuration<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Part 4 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/index.php\/2011\/11\/11\/small-farm-installation-guide-4\/\" title=\"Farm Install Guide \u2013 Part 4\">Additional Configuration<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Installing and Configuring SharePoint 2010 Application Server<\/h1>\n<p>Now that we&#8217;ve installed and configured our Web Front End (WFE) server, the next thing we&#8217;ll setup is the Application server.<\/p>\n<p>For the installation of SharePoint on the Application server, please follow the steps described in the following sections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prerequisite Installation<\/li>\n<li>Service Pack<\/li>\n<li>SharePoint Server 2010 Installation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of which can be found in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/index.php\/2011\/10\/27\/small-farm-installation-guide-1\/\" title=\"Farm Install Guide \u2013 Part 1\">first post<\/a> of this series.<\/p>\n<p>These steps should be carried out on the server you intend to use as the Application server in the SharePoint farm.  Do not follow the instructions in the Web Front End Configuration section, instead follow the instructions given in the Application Configuration section below.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h1>Application Configuration<\/h1>\n<p>To configure the server as an Application server, start the configuration wizard for SharePoint, which if you ticked the <em>run wizard<\/em> option at the end of the installation process will automatically load for you.  Alternatively, start the application SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard from the start menu.<\/p>\n<p>When you come to the <em>Connect to a server<\/em> screen, select <em>Connect to an existing server farm<\/em>, as this is the not the first server in the farm to have SharePoint installed.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Connect-To-Farm.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Connect-To-Farm.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Connect To Farm\" width=\"619\" height=\"173\" class=\"size-full wp-image-588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Connect-To-Farm.png 619w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Connect-To-Farm-300x83.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Connect-To-Farm-500x139.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>The next step is to specify the SQL Server database to connect to.  This must be the same as the WFE, which was added in the Web Front End Configuration section of this post.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Specify-DB-Settings.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Specify-DB-Settings.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Specify DB Settings\" width=\"619\" height=\"200\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Specify-DB-Settings.png 619w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Specify-DB-Settings-300x96.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Specify-DB-Settings-500x161.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Enter the name of the SQL database server and click the <em>Retrieve Database Names<\/em> button.  After doing this, if the connection to SQL is OK, a list of database names will be available in the drop down list.  There should only be one database in the list \u2013 SharePoint_Config.<\/p>\n<p>The next screen of the wizard is where you enter the passphrase created during the WFE installation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Enter-Farm-Passphrase.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Enter-Farm-Passphrase.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Enter Farm Passphrase\" width=\"619\" height=\"180\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Enter-Farm-Passphrase.png 619w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Enter-Farm-Passphrase-300x87.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Enter-Farm-Passphrase-500x145.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Entering the correct passphrase will move to the next stage of the wizard, which is the summary screen of changes that will be made to the farm.<\/p>\n<p>As with before, in the WFE Configuring Progress, progress of the changes being made to the farm is displayed.  This may take a while to complete.<\/p>\n<p>Once the modifications have been applied, a screen similar to below will be shown, confirming the configuration changes that were made.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Farm-Modifications-Complete1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Farm-Modifications-Complete1.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Farm Modifications Complete\" width=\"619\" height=\"233\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Farm-Modifications-Complete1.png 619w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Farm-Modifications-Complete1-300x112.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Farm-Modifications-Complete1-500x188.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click the <em>Finish<\/em> button to exit the wizard.<\/p>\n<h1>Automated Application Server Configuration<\/h1>\n<p>After completing the configuration wizard application, the Central Administration site will launch and display the screen shown below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Application-Server-Configure.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Application-Server-Configure.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Application Server Configure\" width=\"1116\" height=\"297\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Application-Server-Configure.png 1116w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Application-Server-Configure-300x79.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Application-Server-Configure-1024x272.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Application-Server-Configure-500x133.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1116px) 100vw, 1116px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As with the WFE, click the Start the Wizard button to continue.<\/p>\n<p>While the new server is configured a processing page will be shown.  Again, this may take a short while to complete.<\/p>\n<p>Once complete, a summary screen will be displayed, showing a list of the modifications made to the farm.<\/p>\n<p>Click the <em>Finish<\/em> button to continue.<\/p>\n<h1>Manual Application Server Configuration<\/h1>\n<p>As with the WFE, the first part of the manual configuration stage is to configure the services that should be hosted on the server.  From the homepage of Central Administration, click the <em>Manage services on server link<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Manage-Services-on-Server-Link1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Manage-Services-on-Server-Link1.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Manage Services on Server Link\" width=\"820\" height=\"433\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Manage-Services-on-Server-Link1.png 820w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Manage-Services-on-Server-Link1-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Manage-Services-on-Server-Link1-500x264.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If the name of the Application server is not shown in the Server drop down, click the <em>Change Server<\/em> option from the list of server (top right of content page) and select the name of the Application server that was just added.<\/p>\n<p>Now all services for the new Application server will be listed, with their current status.  As we used the wizard to configure the server, we\u2019ll need to manually start or stop certain services to correctly configure the server as an Application server.<\/p>\n<p>From the list of services, all that is required for the new Application server are as follows (for Enterprise edition):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Application Registry Service<\/li>\n<li>Business Data Connectivity Service<\/li>\n<li>Excel Calculation Services<\/li>\n<li>Managed Metadata Web Service<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Incoming E-mail<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Workflow Timer Service<\/li>\n<li>Secure Store Service<\/li>\n<li>User Profile Service<\/li>\n<li>Web Analytics Data Processing Service<\/li>\n<li>Web Analytics Web Service<\/li>\n<li>Word Automation Services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All other services should be stopped.<\/p>\n<p>A service which should also be started on the application server is <em>SharePoint Server Search<\/em>.  This is not a simple case of clicking the start link however, as this service requires some additional configuration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: This service will only be used for the scheduled content crawling and indexing building functionality.<\/p>\n<p>Click the <em>Start<\/em> link for the <em>SharePoint Server Search<\/em> service, clicking OK to the popup message<\/p>\n<p>From the page that loads, click on the <em>Service Search Application<\/em> link.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Search-Service-Application-Link.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Search-Service-Application-Link.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Search Service Application Link\" width=\"644\" height=\"371\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Search-Service-Application-Link.png 644w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Search-Service-Application-Link-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Search-Service-Application-Link-500x288.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scroll down to the bottom of the next page and look for the section titled <em>Search Application Topology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Current-Search-Topology1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Current-Search-Topology1.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Current Search Topology\" width=\"818\" height=\"338\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Current-Search-Topology1.png 818w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Current-Search-Topology1-300x123.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Current-Search-Topology1-500x206.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 818px) 100vw, 818px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you will see, all the services are currently set against the WFE.  We need to change some of these to the Application server.<\/p>\n<p>The configuration we are looking for is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Move the Search Administration component to the new Application Server<\/li>\n<li>Move the Crawl component to the new Application Server<\/li>\n<li>Leave the Database component running on the SQL Server<\/li>\n<li>Leave the Query component running on the WFE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To alter the configuration, click the <em>Modify<\/em> button and then hover your mouse over the <em>Administration Component<\/em> link and click the <em>Edit Properties<\/em> menu item.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Administration-Edit-Properties-Menu.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Administration-Edit-Properties-Menu.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Administration Edit Properties Menu\" width=\"685\" height=\"130\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Administration-Edit-Properties-Menu.png 685w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Administration-Edit-Properties-Menu-300x56.png 300w, https:\/\/www.stuartroberts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Administration-Edit-Properties-Menu-500x94.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the <em>Edit Administration Component<\/em> popup window, change the server to the new Application server and click OK to continue.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat the exact same steps for the <em>Crawl Component<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the two services have been changed to run under the Application server, the next step is to apply the changes.
