Open with Explorer on Server

If you’re developing with SharePoint using Windows Server 2008 (will work with Windows 7, unless someone’s restricted the Windows Features that are installed) and are unable to open a library via Windows Explorer, follow the simple steps outlined below to enable it.

For example, clicking the Open with Explorer library ribbon menu item, can fail and show the Your client does not support opening this list with Windows Explorer. message.

The enable this functionality, the simplest way is to enable the Desktop Experience feature.

Now that we’ve installed and configured our Web Front End (WFE) server, the next thing we’ll setup is the Application server.

For the installation of SharePoint on the Application server, please follow the steps described in the following sections:

  • Prerequisite Installation
  • Service Pack
  • SharePoint Server 2010 Installation

All of which can be found in the first post of this series.

These steps should be carried out on the server you intend to use as the Application server in the SharePoint farm. Do not follow the instructions in the Web Front End Configuration section, instead follow the instructions given in the Application Configuration section below.

This is the second part of a post showing the typical steps required to install and configure a medium sized SharePoint Server 2010 farm. By medium sized, I mean a server comprising 1 web front end, 1 application and a two server SQL cluster. The installation and configuration of SQL is not within the scope of this post.

The first thing we’ll setup is the Web Front End (WFE) server.

Login to the Web server as the setup account for the farm and locate the installation source for SharePoint Server 2010. To start the installation, double click the Setup.exe application. If some of the prerequisites are not present on the server you’ll receiver an error stating that the setup process was unable to proceed due to pre-requisite errors. If this is the case, follow the steps outlined below.
